Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is an innovative aesthetic treatment that uses laser energy to heat and damage your hair follicles to reduce and eliminate body hair growth. Robert Andrews Laser & Medical Aesthetics offers laser hair removal services using the cutting edge Palomar Icon equipment developed by the aesthetic laser specialists at CynoSure®.

You can have laser hair removal almost anywhere on your body, including your:

  • Legs
  • Bikini area
  • Glutes
  • Feet and toes
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Face

Most patients begin with a series of six laser hair removal treatments with about six weeks between appointments. Depending on your hair and skin, you might need more treatments to achieve your desired results.

Hormonal changes and other factors can trigger new hair growth, so you might need additional touch-up treatments from time to time.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

You need to give up waxing, epilating, and/or plucking about six weeks before you start laser treatment. These hair removal methods remove hair at the root, and there needs to be some hair in the follicle to attract the laser. You should shave 24-48 hours before your laser treatment.

You can also take a pain-reliever about 30 minutes before your laser hair removal appointment. It’s also essential to avoid tanning while you have laser hair removal. The extra melanin in your skin can interfere with the effectiveness of your treatment and can cause skin discoloration.

What happens during a laser hair removal treatment?

During your treatment, your provider uses a wax pencil to draw a grid on your skin. Then, while you both wear protective goggles, they follow the grid with the hand-held laser device to ensure that they target all of your hair follicles. While laser hair removal isn’t comfortable, most patients tolerate it well and say the results are worth the temporary discomfort.

After your treatment, they provide a cooling gel to soothe your skin. Your skin might be pink for a little while after your appointment, but any redness usually goes away within an hour or so.

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?

Advances in aesthetic laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people of nearly every skin and hair color. The best way to find out if laser hair removal is right for you is to schedule a consultation.
