Each year, more than 423,000 women get their breasts surgically altered to enlarge or lift them, making these procedures some of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the country. Although modern science has made the surgery safe and accessible, it’s also given you more choices than ever before.
Before you choose the procedure, choose your provider. Nothing matters more when it comes to your delicate breast tissue and achieving safe and beautiful results. Our team of medical experts here at Robert Andrews Laser & Medical Aesthetics has the experience and skill you can trust when making the decision to change your breasts.
We take the time to get to know you and listen to your aesthetic goals. We help you understand what’s possible and what to expect. Your initial consultation will help you and us decide whether a breast augmentation or a breast lift will deliver what you want. Here’s what to consider.
You want to change the size of your breasts
Women come see us to change the size of their breasts for many reasons. Although it’s common to think that bigger is better, that’s only one reason a woman may opt for breast augmentation, which is what we call the procedure that enlarges the breasts.
Women who are born with naturally small breasts or who have lost volume as they aged or after breastfeeding may be looking to increase the size of their breasts. But breast augmentation can also fix asymmetrical breasts and can reconstruct breasts that have been removed in a mastectomy.
The way to increase the size of your breasts is to insert an implant into your breast cavity. The implant can be filled with silicone or saline, and each has its pros and cons. Silicone feels more natural, but it’s harder to know when it’s been ruptured. Saline feels less natural, but if it breaks, your body safely absorbs the fluid, and it’s easy to tell when a rupture has occurred.
Depending on the type of implant, your body, and your wishes, we can hide the small incision either in your armpit, under your breast, or within your areola.
How big you want to go is up to you, but we recommend staying within one or two cup sizes for the most natural look.
You want to change the position of your breasts
If you’re like many women, the size of your breasts is less of a concern than the way they’ve begun to sag and droop over the years. Maybe breastfeeding, extreme weight loss, or gravity did a number on them, and now they look like ski slopes, or the nipples are facing downward.
In cases like these we recommend a breast lift instead of a breast augmentation. The main difference is that your breast lift doesn't involve any implants. Instead, we make an incision that allows us to access your breast tissue, remove excess skin, and reposition your breasts so they sit higher and look and feel firmer.
Combination of breast augmentation and breast lift
It’s important that you understand exactly what each of these procedures can and can’t do for you. If you have sagging breasts and you get breast implants, they will be bigger and still sag. If you wish your breasts were bigger and opt for a breast lift, you may be disappointed that the size remained the same.
The solution is to combine the two procedures in one surgery called an augmentation/pexy. This choice gives you the best of both worlds: fuller, bigger breasts that are front and center.
