Fall Skin Care Routines

We hope you’ve had a beautiful summer, full of adventure and discovery. Did you jump into cold lakes and hike among the mountains? We are so lucky to live in such a sublime place, and though the season is short and fleeting, the memories seem more indelible than those of other times of year. Somehow, we are already inching closer to fall. September means back-to-school time, no matter your age, and autumn feels like a new beginning, with possibilities to refresh our habits and embark upon new, creative and professional endeavors. Your fall skin care routine is as important as new boots and unsharpened pencils, if not more so. The transition from a hot and humid summer into cooler, dryer, and fluctuating temperatures means you need to hydrate and moisturize. We love the freshness of fall, and think it is the ideal time to improve your skin care routine.

Cleanse
In summer, many of us take a more casual approach to our beauty routine – it’s a wash-and-go season. We hope you are slathering on the sunscreen, and helping your skin to heal with aloe, vitamin C, and zinc to combat the after-effects of the sun, but other than that, maybe you leave the rest to nature.

Once it’s September, we are ready to spend a little more time on an aesthetic regime. Take this time for you. Before work in the morning, encourage yourself with positive affirmations, or at the end of the day meditate, relax and unwind, and give yourself the care you need and deserve. Beauty is self-love. Splash water on your face. Treat yourself to a new washcloth or puff. Try a cleanser with a bit of grit, or a brush that will exfoliate to slough-off the dead skin from summer and give you a fresh, dewy and revitalized appearance for fall. It’s the perfect time to introduce a hydrating toner to your routine that contains hyaluronic acid. You never want to use an astringent that will dry out your skin.

Moisturize
Dry skin is as typical of autumn as pumpkin spice and apple picking. You can combat flaky, rough skin by upgrading your moisturizer. Find one that is thicker, especially for an overnight cream. Experiment with various oils, such as coconut, olive, or argan, and add a balm to replenish moisture and nourish your summer-weary skin. And now that we are indoors more, being cozy, reading, and cooking, you can play with new products like masks that brighten and give your complexion a healthy glow. It’s fun to stock the medicine cabinet with new treatments and pretty tubes of creams that make you look and feel beautiful inside and out. And don’t forget that just because the days are significantly shorter, you still need a good sunblock with an SPF of at least 30.

Facials
Your fall skin care routine is not complete without an appointment at your favorite practice for a medical facial. Make it a part of your annual end-of-summer plans to schedule a day with a professional to assess the harm done by the summer sun and correct some of the damage. It is imperative that you connect with a medical spa, where the staff can get to know you and your skin and establish a regular skin care routine for you. If you want to head into the next season of your life with skin that looks youthful and is truly healthy, this must be as much a part of your hygiene ritual as brushing your teeth.
